1. What data we collect

We collect the data you give us, the data created when you use Cococel, and some data we receive from the companies that help us prevent fraud.

Your account

Your name, your email, your phone number, which we ask you to verify, and your password. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email and, from Google, also your name. With Apple, your email may be an Apple relay address. When you open your account we also record how you reached Cococel, for example the link or the ad, and your language. We also keep the preferences you choose in your account, for example the country you usually call or send to and your time zone.

Your purchases

What you buy (top-ups, gift cards, eSIMs or Cococel Balance), when, for what amount and with which payment method, and the phone number you top up, which often belongs to someone else. If you give a gift card, also the delivery details of the person who receives it.

Your payments

Payments are processed by payment providers; we keep the data needed to process and manage your purchases, such as the cardholder’s name, the card brand and its last digits. To prevent fraud we also use data that identifies the card and data about its issuing bank.

Calls and SMS

If you make calls or send SMS with your Cococel Balance, we keep the records of your calls and the messages in your conversations.

Your device and how you use Cococel

Your IP address and the country derived from it, whether you connect through a VPN or from an anonymous IP, and your device and your browser. On the website, also how you use it, for example the pages you visit, to measure and advertise (section 6). On the website and in the apps, also what you view, add to your cart and buy, to choose which promotions to send you (section 2). If you arrive from an ad, we keep the campaign identifiers that the ad platform adds to the link or to your browser, to know which ad brought each purchase.

Support

What you tell us when you write to support or use the help chat.

2. What we use your data for

  • Providing the service: opening and running your account and delivering what you buy. For example, without the number you top up we cannot top it up.
  • Taking payments: processing your payments. Your bank may ask you to confirm a payment (3-D Secure).
  • Preventing fraud and protecting your account: detecting bots and fraudulent use of Cococel. For example, an order placed through a VPN or an anonymous IP may go into review and be declined or refunded.
  • Supporting you: answering your questions and solving problems with your orders.
  • Writing to you: sending you messages about your purchases, your payments and your account, and promotions you can unsubscribe from (section 5). To choose which promotions to send you, we may take into account, for example, the country you usually call or send to, what you view, add to your cart and buy, how you pay and when you visit us, on the website and in the apps.
  • Measuring and advertising: learning how the website is used and showing Cococel ads, with advertising and measurement platforms (sections 3 and 6).
  • Complying with the law: for example, keeping orders and payments as our legal, tax and accounting obligations require.

3. Who we share your data with

We do not sell your data. We share it only in these cases.

Companies that help us provide the service

These companies receive data to do their part of the service:

  • payment processors, for cards and digital wallets;
  • companies that send our messages, for example emails, SMS and notifications;
  • carriers and providers of top-ups, eSIMs and gift cards, which receive the number you top up, because without it the top-up cannot be made;
  • fraud prevention and security services, for example bot detection, location based on your IP, data about your card’s issuing bank or leaked-password checks;
  • customer support tools, for messages to support and the chat;
  • hosting and cloud services;
  • telecom and messaging providers, which carry your international calls and SMS and receive the number you call or text and the text of the SMS.

Advertising and measurement platforms

We use advertising and measurement platforms, for example Google, Meta or TikTok, to measure and show ads. They may receive data through their tools on the website and in the apps, and also from our servers.

  • We send them your email and your phone number encrypted: turned into a code (a “hash”), not as text.
  • As on any website, they receive technical data such as your IP address and your browser.
  • We do not send them the number you top up. Instead, they may receive the identifier of the product you bought.

Other people and other cases

  • If someone invited you to Cococel, that person sees your shortened name and the status of the invitation (section 4).
  • The authorities, when the law requires us to give it to them. And if Cococel is sold or merges with another company, that company, which will have to respect this policy.

4. The “Invite a friend” program

If you take part in the program, its terms and conditions also apply, in addition to this policy.

  • What the person who invites sees. Their friend’s shortened name (for example, “Pedro G.”), the dates and the status of the invitation. They do not see the friend’s email, phone or what the friend bought.
  • When you apply a code we tell you that you accept the program terms and that the person who invited you will see your shortened name.
  • Fraud prevention. We compare technical data from both accounts: the IP address, the country, the device, whether a VPN is used and the data that identifies the cards.

5. Emails, SMS and notifications

  • When you open an account, communications start turned on, for example emails, SMS or push notifications.
  • We may send you messages about your purchases, your payments and your account even if you unsubscribe from promotions. Their delivery depends, among other things, on your device’s permissions, your carrier, the network and our providers.
  • Every promotional email has a link to unsubscribe.
  • You can turn off push notifications in your device settings or in your Cococel account.

6. Cookies and similar technologies

The website uses cookies and similar technologies, such as your browser’s storage, for three things:

  • To work, for example to keep you signed in.
  • To measure how the website is used.
  • To advertise, with advertising and measurement platforms.

You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings. If you block the ones the website needs to work, some parts may stop working. The apps use similar tools to measure their use, advertise, measure campaigns and detect errors. They may use your device’s advertising identifier, which you can reset or limit in your device settings.

7. How long we keep your data

We keep each piece of data for as long as needed for the purpose we collected it for and to meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations, handle disputes and claims, and prevent fraud. After that, we delete it or anonymize it. For example:

  • Orders and payments: for as long as our legal, tax and accounting obligations require.
  • Some data of each order, such as the destination number, the IP and the last digits of the card: for as long as needed to resolve possible payment disputes.
  • Data to prevent fraud, for example the phone number that already received a welcome reward: for as long as needed to prevent fraud.
  • Call records, messages in your SMS conversations in the app and technical logs: for as long as needed to provide the service, handle claims and protect our systems.

We keep the other data of your account while it is open. If you delete your account, section 8 also applies.

8. Deleting your account

You can delete your account whenever you want. The steps are at cococel.com/en/delete-account.

How to ask for it

  • In the app: open “Edit profile” and tap “Deactivate my account”. Although the button says “deactivate”, it deletes your account as explained here.
  • By email: write to support@cococel.com from your account’s email and include your verified phone number.

Before you delete it

  • Any Cococel Balance you have left is lost, and we warn you before deleting. If you want to get back the Cococel Balance you bought, ask for its refund before deleting the account; promotional balance is not refunded (see the Terms and Conditions).
  • You will not be able to open an account again with the same email.

What happens next

  1. We close your sessions right away.
  2. You have 30 days to change your mind: write to support within that time and we cancel the deletion.
  3. After the 30 days, we delete your personal data and your account becomes anonymous: your orders and payments are kept linked to an anonymous identifier. We only keep what section 7 sets out, for the time explained there.

9. Your rights and how to exercise them

You can ask us:

  • for a copy of your personal data;
  • to correct data that is wrong;
  • to delete your data (section 8);
  • not to use your data to show you personalized advertising.

To ask, write to support@cococel.com from your account’s email. We reply within the time set by applicable law.

10. Security

These are some of the measures that protect your account and your payments:

  • bot detection;
  • the leaked-password check, which only uses an encrypted fragment of your password;
  • the payment confirmation your bank may ask you for (3-D Secure);
  • the review of orders placed through a VPN or an anonymous IP.

No system is foolproof. Protect your password, do not share it, and tell us at support@cococel.com if you think someone got into your account. If a security breach affects your data, we will notify you as the law requires.

11. Children

Cococel is not for anyone under 18. When you open an account you state that you are at least 18, or the age of majority where you live if it is higher. If we learn that a minor gave us their data, we close their account and delete their data.

12. Where we store your data

We store your data with hosting and cloud services in the United States. If you use Cococel from another country, your data travels to the United States and is processed there, where data protection laws may differ from those of your country.

13. Changes to this policy

We may change this policy at any time. The version in force is the one published on this page, with the date of its last update at the top.

14. Contact

If you have a question about your data or want to exercise your rights, write to support@cococel.com or use the Help page.
